The Ermita
Another nice place to visit is the little Ermita that is situated in the middle of a pine forest at the top of the Punta de la Mona neighborhood and that has fantastic views from it's nave of the Peñon in Almuñécar. Even if you can't go inside it's a beautiful area to walk around. There is a gravel road that runs up to the ermita from the main road and small paths that run behind it for you to explore.
You can also walk through the little patch of trees to the right of the church that lead to some old rocky stairs that go all the way up to the lighthouse. The views from the tower of both La Herradura and Almunecar are stunning.
The ermita is mostly very quiet during the winter months but springs to action during the summer. Weekly masses are held there from July to August and everyone is welcome.
Getting There
To find the Ermita you can walk or drive from the eastern end of the La Herradura beach all the way up to the top of the Punta. It's about a 15 min walk from the beach but it's a great place to walk because the streets are shaded in a lot of places. It's quiet with little traffic and the houses and neighborhood itself are beautiful. There are flowers in bloom everyone and covering everything and the area is kept pristine. If you drive up to the Ermita there is a small area to park right in front.
