The Village of Itrabo

Itrabo is a beautiful small village of just over 1,000 residents clinging to the side of a mountain on the main road that connects Motril via highway N-323 to the towns of Otivar and the majestic Sierra de Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama mountain range.

The economy of the area surrounding Itrabo is agriculture-based, especially the cultivation of fruit. Itrabo is a traditional Andalucian village made of small whitewashed houses and narrow streets winding their way up the mountainside. The surroundings are rugged and mountainous, yet Itrabo is only a short drive from the coast.

Itrabo has many hectares of vineyards, which produce its exquisite wines, famous in the whole of Andalucia. The mosto wine is of such high quality that local Itrabo producers compete in an annual wine festival at which all the different wines can be tasted, and the prize for best mosto of the year is awarded. The Itrabo wine is accompanied by bread baked in the traditional manner, in wood-fired ovens, and with traditional pastries.

Itrabo has numerous old monuments such as the Parochial Church Nuestra Señora del Carmen constructed in the XVI century and has been well preserved. Itrabo has a small hermitage where according to local legend a virgin appeared centuries ago. The town appears much as it did in the Moorish times of al-Andalus, over 500 years ago. The main places of interest here are the Parochial Church, the hermitage of the Virgen de la Salud, and the ancient fountain Carenata.

At the top of Itrabo is a dirt road that is great for hiking up into the mountains, which winds past imposing limestone outcroppings. interesting old ruins, and the Catarata del Paraíso (Paradise Falls).
